There are lots of sites available that will give you the full technical run down on the Samsung range of LED TVs. They're a great range of TVs but they also make a fabulous custom installation screen and this is a brief introduction as to why they're so good in our multiroom AV systems.
The first thing that grabs most people about these LEDs is their delicacy.· They're incredibly thin, the 7 Series in our demonstration Media Room is less than 3cm deep.· Just as impressive is the remarkably small bezel around the screen.· Wall mounted, these panels come close to feeling like looking out of a window onto the wall. As a company that spends a huge amount of time and effort hiding technology we appreciate just how well these screens can fit into most rooms without dominating them. In one regard their lack of bulk presents another challenge, wall mounts have to be carefully chosen to hang these screens as elegantly as they deserve.
They've got all the inputs you'd expect - a plethora of HDMI inputs plus Component and Composite for older analogue sources. Equally as importantly they've got discreet commands available for all those inputs. This means when we're controlling them with AMX or Control4 we can quickly and accurately switch to the correct input at the same time as the changing the AV receiver, switching the Sky+ HD box on etc.
So they look great, they've got all the right inputs and they're easy to control. None of which would count for much if they didn't do the business when you turned them on. No worries on that score. Picture quality is remarkable even when showing standard definition content. We've got a Kaleidescape movie player connected to our demonstration model and the combination of the Kaleidescape and the Samsung make even standard definition DVD material look like it's had a complete makeover. The same is true of the variable quality material you'll find on Sky and of course it does a great job of showing HD content whether from Sky HD or Blu-ray.
TVs are rapidly becoming much more than that. The Samsungs are positioned as Smart Media hubs, so they can access and display your digital media collection, showing photos and playing MP3s. Because they're networked they can access media anywhere else on the network and of course they can access content over the internet as well. And it's not just films and music; they've got a wide range of apps that connect you with social sites like Twitter, flickr and Facebook. We're not convinced how much use some of those features will actually get in real-life installs but some of them are very useful - a built in client for the BBC iPlayer is a fantastic benefit.
And of course there's the 3D promise. Whether you think 3D has got a future or not, it's an interesting avenue and everyone coming in for a demonstration is very keen to see it. There's not a huge amount of content at the moment, a relatively small number of movies, some games and the Sky3D channel. Even so, there's enough there to see what can be done and most people who've watched it in the Media Room have found something there that's really impressed. Sport may well be the killer app for 3D rather than movies with Football, Rugby and Golf translating really well to the format. The BBC showed Wimbledon in 3D in 2011 on their BBC HD channel and Sky's coverage of sporting events is improving all the time.
