Lighting Portfolio
This new build contemporary space was designed to be open plan, light and airy, a warm family home, a party venue, and a series of intimate spaces linked by distant focal points. A potentially conflicting set of requirements, but all possible with careful planning – and particularly with imaginative lighting design. This project has earned Brilliant a nomination as Finalists in the Lighting Design Awards 2011 Residential Lighting category.
The open plan kitchen, dining area and family space required three separate but sympathetic lighting treatments. The very modern clean lined kitchen is complemented by low glare ‘framelights’ and accent lighting is provided by the fireplace and the very discrete square white LEDs on the island which provide a low level wash on to the floor.
The aesthetically minimalist dining area is complemented by an aluminium profile over the dining table. The profile required custom made brackets to hang it from the roof glazing bars without compromising the water tightness of the roof and to blend in with its wood finish. The vertical glazing bars at the front of the conservatory are uplit by colour changing LEDs which are usually set to give a very soft pink glow which lifts the whole of this end of the house, but in party mode they can be vibrant pink or turquoise. Lighting control is by Lutron Homeworks.
This stunning new build house has been designed to look glamorous, feel wonderful, be easy to control and work on a very practical level too. The design had to work functionally, safely (for example, with two young children accessible fittings had to be cold to the touch) and as efficiently as possible.
The master suite features a beautiful LED uplit bath, a softly glowing glass dividing wall (again using LEDs), and excellent mirror lighting. The wonderful end result has been achieved through creative design, technically understanding the right fittings for the job, and real attention to detail. For example, because the bath was an unusual asymmetric shape we obtained a template from the manufacturer, printed it out life size, drew onto it exactly where the fittings should go, and gave it to the builder – all before the floor UFH went down and the concrete screed was poured.
This super Georgian country house has been given a sensitive update using our combined interior design and lighting design services.
The original brief was to assist with the lighting and interior design in some newly created bathrooms in the eaves of the house, without any form of natural daylight. The spaces were given shape and interest using low glare downlights, uplighting and good lighting around the mirrors.
The brief was then extended to include all of the areas of the house being renovated, including the master suite and the fabulous kitchen.
The brief for this project was to create the warmth and elegance of a luxury country hotel. These photos give you a flavour of the house, and in particular demonstrate how the lighting design and the lighting control system work together to effortlessly change mood and focus.
The kitchen is stunning but has a relatively low ceiling for the size of the room. A conventional grid of downlights would have made the space appear dull, flat and oppressive. Getting light up on to the ceiling visually raises the space but the only fixing point for a wall light was the pillar in the centre. We used the pillar, the bay window ledge and a very focused beam on to the polished granite island in order to bounce light up on to the ceiling, and give it vibrancy and life. Carefully positioned downlights around the room perimeter wash light down the oak units, and low level LEDs wash light across the stone floor.
Rako lighting control gives easy scene control and overall house control benefits. RTI control integrates the lighting control system with the house's multiroom audio and video setup.
This wonderful 1730’s barn was both a challenge and very exciting to light. The clients wanted to create a vibrant space for their young family, creating a contemporary feel whilst accentuating the stunning old barn features. Challenges included lighting the 9.5m high central space without losing intimacy and ‘connection’ with the ground level, and conversely, creating a sense of height in some of the upstairs bathrooms which were tucked in under the eaves.
Things such as choice of lamp technology (trading off heat, lamp changing and light output), lamp colour, and making the most of the limited fixing points were all important. Decorative fittings were carefully chosen to compliment the interiors, eg; the orange O-Space pendant picks up the curves and finishes of the ‘Ant’ dining chairs.
Lighting control by Rako gives easy access to the lighting scenes in this impressive space.
This impactful lighting scheme turns a rectangular room into a real talking point. The inspiration was the wonderful curved kitchen units which is reflected up in the dropped ceiling, cove lit with cold cathode.
The clients took the bold decision of having brilliant blue cold cathode, although this is supplemented by halogen downlights on to the working surfaces. LEDs at low level around the island ‘balance’ the ceiling, and provide subtle night lighting.
The client brief for this Grade II listed house in South Yorkshire was for comfortable, elegant lighting which complemented the architecture and interiors. The style is modern and clean-lined but without being hard and industrial.
Lutron lighting control gives elegant seamless control of individual rooms and of the overall house and extensive garden lighting. AMX links the lighting control with the wider home automation and multiroom audio / video and heating control systems
The lighting in this small Yorkshire Dales cottage had to complement the house’s immense character and also be relatively discrete and simple. Ground recessed lighting was used in a couple of areas to great effect.
The floor is an often overlooked fixing point but it is often the best place to light from for both aesthetic and practical reasons: in the corridor for example wall lights were impractical because they would have projected too far, and ceiling lighting would have been both visually obtrusive and made the low ceiling seem lower and oppressive. Ground uplighting accentuates rather than fights the beams.
