When to involve a lighting designer

The best time is right at the start of any potential building or renovation work. This enables the physical structure and the lighting that best sets if off to be seamlessly integrated. For example, incorporating and lighting a false ceiling shape to enliven a long corridor, or skimming light down a textured slate wall to create dramatic impact. Also, these early discussions enable the light fittings to be physically fitted, for example back lighting opaque shower tiles with fibre optic lights looks stunning, but this needs to be built in prior to the walls being plastered and the tiles applied. We are able to work with architects, interior designers and builders at this early stage.

detail of Ladybower projectThe next best time is before the electrical wiring is decided and done. Designing the lighting and the lighting control systems before the electrical ‘first fit’ gives you much more freedom of choice around lighting impact and effect. For example, by being able to specify which lights you want on which circuit, you can transform the lighting in a room from being intimate to dramatic to task focused, whereas one circuit is unlikely to be provide this range. If first fit has already happened the electrics can usually be changed, but this may involve rework and cosmetic repair that could have been avoided.

Even if you are even further through the decorating process it is still potentially not too late to seek advice, although the scope for improvement will be much more limited, and/or potentially more expensive to implement.

Brilliant are always looking for new lighting products. We work with a wide array of suppliers many of whose products are simply not available through retail channels.

As well as some of the larger, more well known designer brands we also seek out new, smaller designers. Here we showcase some of the decorative light fittings which we particularly love.

Light is often the single most important factor in a room yet it is frequently overlooked. Good lighting is about altering perceptions of light and space, creating focal points and enhancing features, and creating moods or enabling tasks. It’s much more than just ensuring that the light level is adequate or incorporating a striking light fitting into an interior design, although both of these can be important.

People are increasingly recognizing the importance of good lighting, both for their own enjoyment of a house and for the enhancement of its value. But where do you start? Fittings are confusing and many are not widely available, positioning them correctly is a minefield, and how do you add that interesting twist or ‘wow’ factor? Control systems can be simple or sophisticated but do need to be considered right at the start. It’s risky since you can’t ‘test’ it until it is finished, and expensive – particularly if you get it wrong.

We aim to take the mystery out of good lighting and help you make the most of your space. Our approach is to work closely with you, to understand how you use the space, what you want to emphasise, and how these needs may change.
