The Design Process

beautiful French Leaf lightOur approach is to work closely with you, to understand how you use the space, what you want to emphasise, and how these needs may change. We only work with a small number of clients at a time and are committed to providing tailored, good value solutions.

We are able to source fittings from a wide range of suppliers and can work with (if applicable) your architect or interior designer to ensure that designs are seamless and complimentary.

A key part of the design process is establishing:

  • How you use a space, and what degree of lighting flexibility is required over time (over a day, or as room use changes over a few years)
  • How the space itself ‘works’ architecturally, and what aspects of it could be highlighted or hidden
  • The colour and texture of the surfaces being lit
  • Whether you have particular paintings, object d’art or materials that you wish to make a feature of
  • What type of effect you want to achieve (eg; subtle or dramatic) and how this fits in with your overall design scheme
  • Practical considerations such as ease of changing a light bulb, or not placing hot light fittings where they may be touched.
  • How integrated you want lighting control to be, eg; each circuit as stand alone, or integrated in to whole room scenes, or integrated in to whole house control systems to tie in with your audio-visual systems, security etc
  • Exact dimensions of the space and any architectural details (dimensions, ceiling height etc)
  • Budget

With these needs and criteria and mind, we would consider:

  • the colour and characteristics of the light required, and hence the lamp bulb type
  • wattage
  • bulb beam width: this effects where light goes and the intensity of contrast between light and shade
  • light fitting positioning (e.g.; in the ceiling, floor, wall etc)
  • controllability
  • ….and then finally the light fitting itself

discussing initial lighting conceptsThe usual design process would be an initial visit to understand your requirements and to look at the space, followed by one or two site visits to discuss and finalise ideas. Scale plans would be drawn from scratch if required, or your existing architects/designers plans marked up if available.

Depending on the size of the job, at least one site visit is recommended whilst the electricians are doing first fit, as even the most carefully worked out plans have to be adapted due to ceiling joists being in the way or interior decisions changing on the spot. Obviously if your budget or circumstances dictate that the design process stops at the plan stage then we can work within that, but follow up visits are preferable.

Brilliant are always looking for new lighting products. We work with a wide array of suppliers many of whose products are simply not available through retail channels.

As well as some of the larger, more well known designer brands we also seek out new, smaller designers. Here we showcase some of the decorative light fittings which we particularly love.

  • Lighting Design  ( 1 items )
Light is often the single most important factor in a room yet it is frequently overlooked. Good lighting is about altering perceptions of light and space, creating focal points and enhancing features, and creating moods or enabling tasks. It’s much more than just ensuring that the light level is adequate or incorporating a striking light fitting into an interior design, although both of these can be important.

People are increasingly recognizing the importance of good lighting, both for their own enjoyment of a house and for the enhancement of its value. But where do you start? Fittings are confusing and many are not widely available, positioning them correctly is a minefield, and how do you add that interesting twist or ‘wow’ factor? Control systems can be simple or sophisticated but do need to be considered right at the start. It’s risky since you can’t ‘test’ it until it is finished, and expensive – particularly if you get it wrong.

We aim to take the mystery out of good lighting and help you make the most of your space. Our approach is to work closely with you, to understand how you use the space, what you want to emphasise, and how these needs may change.
